Daan Peeters: ‘As a CEO, interpersonal skills are essential’

Strategy and business development have been central to Daan Peeters’ career from the very beginning. These are key aspects he fully realizes in his role as CEO of Machiels Building Solutions, a specialist in sustainable timber frame construction. What else drives him on his career and life path? Long-term thinking and intrinsic motivation.

Daan Peeters: 'I want Machiels Building Solutions to run like clockwork, on both a micro and macro level.'

Since the start of his career, strategy has been central to Daan Peeters’ work. ‘I am constantly looking for intellectual challenges and enjoy solving complex problems. I find it important to create an impact on the projects I commit to. Linked to that, business development is also central to my career. Stimulating growth for companies and finding and creating opportunities interests me enormously. I enjoy working with other companies and people. I believe in the power of collaboration. Business development is results-oriented and gives me a great sense of fulfillment.’

‘Over the years, my ambition has never changed. I want to make this company run like clockwork, on both a micro and macro level. In doing so, I want to create shareholder value on the one hand, and on the other, contribute to the sector and a better world.’

The importance of intrinsic motivation

‘At Machiels Building Solutions, we are convinced that the construction sector must evolve and industrialize to become more efficient, sustainable, and future-proof. We believe we have a pioneering role to play in this. We don’t do greenwashing. What and how we build effectively has a low impact on the environment. It is our goal to communicate this transparently to the outside world.’

‘The construction sector is responsible for a large part of emissions, and that must go back to zero. Especially if we want to leave a livable world for future generations. I want to help make my mark on that. I am convinced that all companies that commit to a better world will continue to have a good reason to exist in the future.’

‘One of my strongest qualities as a CEO? Maintaining a long-term vision. Every strategy that is born must be future-proof. We are working on things that might not be immediately visible in the short term, but all the more so in the long term. That brings some positive stress with it. Something I am very susceptible to and can sometimes lose sleep over.’

‘I am convinced that all companies that commit to a better world will have a good reason to exist in the future’

‘I also think long-term on a personal level. I find it important to have a clear picture of where I want to go as a person. That also ensures that I am intrinsically motivated to achieve 그 goal. And intrinsic motivation is the best motivation there is, the kind that gives the most satisfaction. I even wrote my thesis on it! It was about how a clear image of your professional self leads to a higher degree of intrinsic motivation.’

‘Since I became a father myself, I think even more across generations. What kind of world will my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren end up in? What are we leaving behind?'

Daan Peeters on personal ambition and balance

‘I am still full of ambitions, also outside my role as CEO. For example, I would like to contribute to the academic world alongside my job. I don’t know what or when yet, but it’s definitely going to happen. On a personal level, it’s my ambition to run my first marathon next year. And to keep a good balance between my job and family life.’

‘I also encourage that balance among my employees. It is very important that as a CEO you have interpersonal skills: empathy, being able to read people, being human. This also allows me to make a clear distinction between the person themselves and their professional role. Every company is essentially a group of people working together. The challenge lies in turning that group of people into a team.’

It gives me even more genuine motivation to contribute my part to a better world. I am also convinced that when everyone works together on things that have a long-term effect, we will still take very beautiful steps forward.’

How we made MBS stand out

Machiels Building Solutions wants to increase its market presence and improve the perception of building with sustainable materials, such as wood. As they are a company with engineering profiles themselves, they often lack creative solutions in terms of communication. That’s where Expliciet comes in. We think in an innovative way about how we can reach their target audience.

We went for a rebranding with a new website and baseline, set up social campaigns, and started a structural communication strategy. In short, everything to create the necessary awareness and highlight the sustainability of their product.
