We are delighted to introduce you to our Sarah Morini. Graphic designer during office hours, horoscope lady during lunch, but actually just a full-time creative. Oh yes, watch your fonts when you’re around her.
“By the age of 15, I already knew I wanted to be a graphic designer. Most people think we can all draw incredibly well and are always being creative. In a way, that’s true (laughs), but there’s much more to it. Thinking along with the client, helping to determine how a particular brand should come across, how they want to present themselves to the world. I prefer working on magazines and branding stories because I can really immerse myself in them.”
Is there such a thing as the typical Morini touch? “In magazines especially, I work a lot with rhythm. How can I visually translate what the copywriter has written in the strongest possible way? For example, how can I guide the reading pace or direction by playing with visual blocks, pieces of text, images, or shapes?”
How difficult is it to be creative on the spot? “Just like everyone else, you have your good days and your bad days. Either way, my day starts with a coffee; I don’t function without it. We always have a clear goal that we all need to work towards for the client. That provides direction. That’s very different from when I’m being creative in my spare time. Then I just start without thinking and want to fully enjoy the creative process.”
No creativity without inspiration. “I must have music around me. It opens the gate to my own fantasy world. For every type of assignment, I have a genre that gets me into my flow. But traveling is also a real source of inspiration. I now have a large box full of art and kitsch from abroad in my apartment (laughs).”
“As a Heart Hunter, I am also very proud of my Book of Hearts by Francesca Gavin. I bought the book in Porto. In the little bookstore, by the way, that inspired J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It’s a book about the symbolism of the heart and how it has been used visually throughout history. Highly recommended!”
“And then there are my friends. Perhaps unconsciously the greatest source of inspiration of all. Not coincidentally, they are all creatives too: a painter, a sculptor, a chef… Their perspective on the world certainly gives me new insights.”
“I’m also super happy that at Expliciet I can be the same person I am with my friends. Positive-minded, with a sense of humor and a listening ear. I get the freedom to be myself and they appreciate that here, I hope. Even if it means I pick up the newspaper at noon and start reading their horoscopes (laughs).”
Finally, what ambitions does Sarah have in the graphic field? “It’s certainly not my ambition to become an Artist with a capital A. Although I have found a fun pastime in painting my coffee service. That has become a real hobby in the meantime. No, I see myself becoming a teacher one day. Challenging a new generation to learn to think creatively. Or perhaps an art director. But first, let me find my way here and keep challenging myself.”

ILLUSTRATIONS / ART
As a child, I wanted to be an artist. I can still get completely lost in art. I often buy nice prints or books with illustrations at exhibitions. My favorite artist? Modigliani, without a doubt. My biggest artistic turn-off? Comic Sans! That’s pretty much the Hawaiian Pizza of the graphic world, it’s just not done.
PSYCHOLOGY
Being around other people makes me very happy. Not just because I’m a very social being, but also because I find it interesting to see how different everyone is. What my friends and I do have in common is that we each look at the world with an open mind. Without immediately having a judgment ready. I believe that’s the only way to meet fascinating new people and discover things and places you would otherwise never see.
TRAVELING
Traveling is one of my favorite activities. My favorite destinations? Berlin, because of the vibrant mix of music, art, and cultures. And the Azores with their wonderful nature, without the crowds of tourists. Asia is also on the bucket list. But I can also certainly enjoy myself closer to home. Just walking around the streets of Genk or Hasselt and discovering new, cool spots. If anyone is looking for great addresses, let me know 😉
