Plan your workday like a pro: get more done in the same amount of hours
Your workday has only just begun, yet you’re already playing catch-up. No matter what you try, you’re always one step behind. Sound familiar? Here are four tips for planning your workday efficiently.
1. Start your morning in the afternoon
At the end of my workday, I lay the foundation for a successful morning. It has truly become a routine. I look at what’s on the schedule for the next day. What are the priorities? Are there things I can already set in motion? Do I need more input for a specific project?
This gives me an enormous sense of peace. And it makes the difference between a good start or getting stuck immediately.
2. Divide your day into (overly) large blocks
I don’t believe in a system where you schedule every tiny detail in your calendar. I jot down individual tasks on an A4 sheet and only schedule the large blocks. I set clear goals for myself: I want to do this in the morning; that needs to happen in the afternoon.
But I always leave a margin. I always allow some extra time for those blocks. Because something always comes up: a quick question, an unexpected problem… If you overstuff your schedule, the slightest thing will throw it into chaos. That really doesn’t make you happy. So, create a little breathing room for yourself.
3. Don't just relax, work ahead
When things are a bit quieter, it’s tempting to ease off the gas for a while. But those are exactly the moments when you can work ahead. Be proactive! That way, you’ll make that heavy week coming up a lot lighter.
I know: it’s not always easy… And sometimes I dare to break this rule too. But still: just do it!
4. Develop an approach for your mailbox
For me, a well-structured mailbox is essential for successful daily planning. I previously wrote a blog about it with tips and tricks.
