The powerful tagline: a term we juggle with as if it’s nothing, but one that makes some people frown in confusion. What if I told you that you know dozens of them by heart, often without even realizing it?

Don’t believe me? Time for a serious test! I’ll give you a tagline, you tell me the brand:

  • Gives you wings
  • Think different

Did you answer Nike, Red Bull, and Apple, just like probably hundreds of others? Hooray, the tagline works! But what exactly is it? Well, a tagline is a short and powerful phrase that accompanies your logo and lasts for years. It is often the first introduction customers have to your brand, sticking in their minds and representing what your company or brand stands for in the most objective way possible. It is a sentence that captures the pure essence of your company, around which you can build your further communication.

A rock-solid tagline stands the test of time. What exactly should you keep in mind when choosing such a powerful phrase? Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • go for short and powerful
  • showcase a benefit or a call-to-action
  • be unique and avoid cliché taglines that competitors could also use
  • keep the message as simple and preferably as short as possible
  • mention what you excel at, your USP

Tagline or slogan?

Note that a tagline is not the same as a slogan. Think, for example, of the slogan ‘Men know why’ (Jupiler? Correct!). While these types of slogans are only present for the duration of a campaign—for new products, for instance—a powerful tagline sticks with your company for years.
